Appointments to SARS Trust Fund Committee and related Review Committee announced

     The Government announced today (November 6) the appointment of the chairperson and three new members, as well as the re-appointment of an incumbent member, to the Committee on Trust Fund for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) for a term of two years with effect from November 8.

     The new chairperson is Ms Deborah Wan Lai-yau, and the three new members are Dr James Joseph Lam, Mr Wong King-lun and Mr Fong Cheung-fat.  Dr Margaret Chung Wai-ling is re-appointed as a member to the committee.

     Ms Deborah Wan Lai-yau is a veteran social worker. She is a member of the Advisory Committee on Enhancing Employment of People with Disabilities, the Advisory Committee on Social Work Training and Manpower Planning, and the Medical Council of Hong Kong.  

     Dr James Joseph Lam is an orthopaedic surgeon and a member of the Rehabilitation Advisory Committee.  

     Mr Wong King-lun is a businessman currently serving on the Rehabilitation Advisory Committee's Sub-committee on Employment.  

     Mr Fong Cheung-fat is the Chief Executive of the Spastics Association of Hong Kong and has rich experience in the rehabilitation field.  

     The Government also re-appointed Mr Jat Sew-tong as the chairman of the Review Committee on Trust Fund for SARS. Mr Timothy Ma Kam-wah is re-appointed a member to the Review Committee while Dr Jane Chan Chun-kwong is appointed as a member. All appointments are for a term of two years with effect from November 8.

     Dr Jane Chan Chun-kwong is a medical doctor specialising in respirology.  She is an Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Hong Kong.

     The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, welcomed the appointments, and looked forward to members' contribution to the work of the two committees. Mr Cheung also thanked the out-going chairman of the Committee on Trust Fund, Dr David Fang, and the out-going members of the committee, Ms Scarlett Pong Oi-lan and Mr Benedict Wong Chung-mat, as well as the out-going member of the Review Committee, Professor Richard Yu Yue-hong, for their valuable contribution and constructive advice tendered during their tenure.

      The Committee on Trust Fund for SARS was set up in 2003 to advise the Administration on the operation of and applications for assistance under the Trust Fund. The Review Committee was set up at the same time to consider applications for review of the decisions made by the Committee on Trust Fund. Assistance under the Trust Fund to recovered SARS patients and "suspected" SARS patients treated with steroids is subject to regular assessment on their medical and financial conditions.
