Speech by CE at opening ceremony of the Hong Kong National Geopark (with photos/video)
***********************************************************

Following is the speech of the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, at the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong National Geopark at the East Dam of High Island Reservoir, Sai Kung today (November 3) :

Let me say a few words in English.

I am exceedingly delighted to join you here in front of these unique hexagonal columns, and witness the opening of the Hong Kong National Geopark.

The Ministry of Land and Resources has just granted us national geopark status.  This status confirms two important achievements, first, Hong Kongˇ¦s geological resources are unique and world-class, and, second, we have in place adequate legal and administrative systems to protect and manage the Hong Kong National Geopark.  We will redouble our efforts to preserve these special geological features of ours, and promote them to the rest of the world.

In the future, I hope that when people think about Hong Kong, they will not only admire our skyscrapers and be attracted to our busy shopping areas, but also the unique geological formations and natural beauty of Hong Kong that we proudly present to locals and overseas tourists alike.

Last but not the least, I thank Vice-Minister Wang, as well as Dr Eder from UNESCO, and the many other guests from around the world who have travelled long distances to celebrate this important occasion with us today.  Thank you very much.
