HKEAA 2009 Territory-wide System Assessment Report
**************************************************

The Education Bureau (EDB) today (October 30) received from the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) the report of the 2009 Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA).  HKEAA will provide school level data to schools shortly for school improvement purposes.  Due to the suspension of classes of primary schools caused by H1N1 Human Swine Influenza, only about 75,000 Secondary 3 students from 440 secondary schools took part in the assessment this year.

"Performance of Secondary 3 students in the three core subjects of Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics is steady," the spokesman said.

Introduced in 2004 at Primary 3 and extended to cover higher levels over the years, the assessment aims to help schools understand students' performance in attaining basic competency, and their strengths and weaknesses in the subjects of Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics at Primary 3, Primary 6 and Secondary 3 levels.  It also helps schools devise suitable curriculum plans and strategies for learning and teaching to enhance student learning.

"The Education Bureau will continue to support schools in assessment for learning by providing professional development programmes and targeted on-site school-based support services.  Seminars on Assessment for Learning will also be conducted to facilitate the sharing of good practices among schools and teachers," the spokesman said.

The territory-wide percentages of students achieving basic competency in 2004-2009 are shown in the appendix.  For details of the Territory-wide System Assessment and this year's results, please refer to the website: www.systemassessment.edu.hk
