Stamp sheetlet design competition organised to commemorate Prof. Charles Kao's achievement

     A Leisure and Cultural Services Department spokesman said today (October 21) that the department had organised a stamp sheetlet design competition to commemorate Prof. Charles Kao's being awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his groundbreaking achievements in fiber optics communication.

     The "Stamp Sheetlet Design Competition in Honour of Prof. Charles Kao's Being Awarded the Nobel Prize" is open for participation for Hong Kongˇ¦s residents. They are invited to submit entries to the Hong Kong Science Museum between November 16 and December 4.

     The theme of the entries for this competition should relate to Prof. Charles Kao's being awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his groundbreaking achievements in fiber optics communication. And the design should be in stamp sheetlet format. The design of winning entries will have the opportunity to be considered by the Hongkong Post for the production of definitive stamp sheetlet to be issued in 2010.

     The competition is divided into two divisions - Open Division and Student Division. Student Division is sub-divided into Secondary School Division (F.1 to F.7 students) and Primary School Division (P.1 to P.6 students). Participants of the Student Division have to choose the sub-division that they will take part according to the class that they will attend by the deadline of the entries submission. Students may choose to participate in either the Student Division or the Open Division but no more than one division. Entrants of all divisions have to join as individual participant and each entrant can submit one design only.

     All designs and their brief description must not be published previously. They must be original works created by the participants and will not infringe any intellectual property rights of any other person.  Judging criteria include contents, creativity, style, theme rendition, and aesthetic appeal of colour use and design. Entry may either be drawn by hand or produced by using a computer. No matter the entry is drawn by hand or produced by using a computer, it shall be mounted on an A3 cardboard (30cm x 42cm). The stamp sheetlet should be 13cm x 7.5cm in size with a HK$10 definitive stamp at the bottom left corner. The competition is to invite entries of design of a stamp sheetlet on the area apart from the stamp position.  Space should be allowed to embed a design for a HK$10 face value stamp sheetlet. The duly completed application form shall be attached on the back of the cardboard. Entrant can describe the concept of the design in writing not exceeding 100 words in Chinese or English. The description shall be attached on the back of the cardboard. All designs and the written description submitted will not be returned to the participants. The organiser reserves the right to recommend the winning designs to Hongkong Post for stamp sheetlet production. Hongkong Post will make its final decision on production matters.  Hongkong Post reserves the rights not to adopt the winning designs if copyright of the images of related infrastructures or facilities could not be obtained.

     Cash prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $1,000 will be awarded respectively to the winners of the first, second and third places and $500 will go to the winners of the Merit Prize in each division. Certificates will also be presented to the award winners.

Entries should be submitted, along with the completed entry forms, to the "Drop-in-Box for the Stamp Sheetlet Design Competition" at the staff entrance of the Hong Kong Science Museum, 2 Science Museum Road, Tsimshatsui East, Kowloon, Hong Kong between 10am, November 16 and 5pm, December 4. Please mark "Stamp Sheetlet Design Competition in Honour of Professor Charles Kaoˇ¦s Being Awarded the Nobel Prize" on the envelope. All entries have to be submitted by hand. Submissions by mail will not be accepted. Late submissions or entries not submitted in accordance with the rules and regulations set by the organiser will not be considered.

     The result will be announced on the website of the Hong Kong Science Museum by mid December 2009 while winners will receive written notice individually. For details of the competition, please call the Science Museum at 2732 3220.
