Works by members of Hong Kong Graphics Society on display tomorrow (with photos)

Print-making involves a complicated plate making and printing process. Although printing technology is digitalised today, print artists still find enjoyment in the traditional craft approach. They enjoy the enormous flexibility and imaginative possibilities that print-making offers, and that make it applicable in mixed-media art productions and as an energetic and interesting art form. People who are interested in the latest developments in Hong Kong print art are invited to a print exhibition running from tomorrow (October 16) to October 28 at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre.

The "Heartstrings ¡V Print Exhibition 2009 by the Hong Kong Graphics Society" is one of the solo exhibitions of the "Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme IV" organised by the Art Promotion Office (APO) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held in two stages. The first stage featuring 70 works will run from tomorrow to October 28 at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, while the second stage with 26 works will be on display from November 1 to 17 at Homantin Plaza.

This exhibition will bring together works by 26 members of the Hong Kong Graphics Society. In addition to the four main types of print - lithography, intaglio, relief and serigraphy - the prints exhibited will also include mixed-media, digital and gum bichromate prints. This exhibition is a large showcase of the wonderful works by the society's members.

The Hong Kong Graphics Society was established in 1976. There are now about 30 members and the majority of them received training in art and printmaking in Hong Kong or Mainland China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia. Some members have gained international awards or their print works were selected for display by the Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibition, the National Print Exhibitions of China, and other important international print exhibitions. In the past 33 years, the society has introduced printmaking to the general public through activities like exhibitions, talks, artist-in-residence programmes and printmaking demonstrations. The society has also held exchange exhibitions with graphic art organisations of Taiwan, Malaysia, Chinese cities including Shanghai, and provinces such as Jiangsu, Heilongjiang and Anhui, in order to broaden the creative horizons of local graphic artists and promote printmaking creation and art exchange.

The "Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme" is a community art project organised by the APO to showcase the works of artists or art groups through partnerships with different organisations. The project enables the general public to take a break from the hectic pace of everyday life and appreciate outstanding works by local artists.

The Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre is located at 7A Kennedy Road, Central, Hong Kong, and is open daily from 10am to 9pm. It is closed on Tuesdays. Homantin Plaza is located at 80 Fat Kwong Street, Homantin, Kowloon, and is open daily from 9am to 9pm. Admission to the exhibition is free.
