Manager, staff club fined for illegal clubhouse operation

A clubhouse manager and a staff club were each fined $2,000 by the Kowloon City Magistrates' Court today (October 7) for contravening the Clubs (Safety of Premises) Ordinance.

The court heard that a clubhouse in Hung Hom operated with a certificate of compliance under the ordinance. In March this year, officers from the Home Affairs Department's Office of the Licensing Authority posed as customers and patronised the clubhouse without being asked to register as members.

The manager of the clubhouse was charged with contravening Section 21(1)(a) of the Ordinance while the staff club, being the party in whose name the certificate of compliance was issued, was charged with contravening Section 21(2) of the Ordinance.

A department spokesman said robust enforcement action would continue to be taken against illegal clubhouse operations.
