HA announces one fatal case and two critical cases of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (October 5) announced a fatal case of human swine influenza and two new critical cases:

     A 52-year-old male patient with diabetes mellitus and hypertension developed flu symptoms on September 25 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Kwong Wah Hospital on September 29.  The patient was admitted for clinical treatment.  Positive result of HSI was confirmed on the same day and he was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics.  The condition of the patient deteriorated on September 30 and he succumbed at 11.11pm yesterday (October 4).

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.  The hospital would like to express its condolences to the deceased's family.

     There is a newly confirmed critical case of human swine influenza in Pamela Youde Nethersole Hospital (PYNEH). A 61-year-old male patient who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and is a chronic smoker developed flu symptoms on October 3. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of PYNEH yesterday (October 4) and was subsequently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.  Positive result of HSI was confirmed on the same day.  The patient was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics and is currently on ventilation support.  The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

     Another newly confirmed critical case is a 54-year-old female patient with a medical history of hypertension and obesity. The patient attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital on October 3 due to influenza-like symptoms and abdominal pain. She was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit afterwards. Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed yesterday. She was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics and is currently on ventilation support. The hospital will closely monitor her condition.
