Yau Tsim Mong to launch community arts festivals (with photos)

     Tsim Sha Tsui's Canton Road will be turned into an arts boulevard on the afternoon of September 20 with various arts performances and giving people the chance to see the diversified local arts culture.

     The "Celebrating National Day and Welcoming East Asian Games - Yau Tsim Mong Community Arts Spectacle" will be held from 1pm to 5pm on Sunday (September 20). Admission is free.

     Yau Tsim Mong will be the first of the 18 districts to hold community arts festivals. The event is jointly organised by the Yau Tsim Mong District Office and Yau Tsim Mong District Organising Committee on Publicity and Promotion of East Asian Games under the auspices of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council.

     Whether people are fans of traditional arts, classic or pop music, there is something in the arts festivals that they can have fun with. Some of the highlights are:

     East Asian Games and creative art:

* Hong Kong Arts Centre will join with local artist Law Yuk-mui to set up a workshop called "East Asia ¡V Art & Cultural Travel". The workshop aims to enhance the public¡¦s cultural imagination of the eight participating countries/regions of the East Asian Games apart from Hong Kong.

     Temple Street and a mix of Chinese and Western arts:

* Popular singer in Temple Street, Wan Kong, will show the exclusive charm of Temple Street through his songs and hip hop dance.

* Cantonese opera performers Wai Chun-ying and Emily Chan Wing-yee, performers from the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong and "Cha Duk Chang" - Chinese Opera association for children will showcase their talents.

* Young vocalists will also perform the famous Broadway musical, "The Phantom of the Opera".

* Canto-pop singer Elisa Chan and City Contemporary Dance Company will also perform.

     Art of jade carving:

* Jade accessories valued at more than $10 million will be on display and there will be a demonstration of jade carving skills.

     Energetic Street Performance:

* Demonstration by Olympic table tennis medallists Li Ching and Ko Lai Chak; Indian dances by the ethnic minorities; Chinese Kung Fu "Wing Chun" and shuttlecock.

     Exhibition of collectors' cars:

* Ten precious collectors' cars from the Collectors' Car Club of Hong Kong will be on display for photo-taking.
