SHA to attend Deaflympics in Taipei (with photos)

     The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, has accepted an invitation to attend the 21st Summer Deaflympics Taipei 2009 and will leave for Taipei on September 13. He will visit the Hong Kong delegation at the games.

     The Hong Kong Deaflympics Team will leave for Taipei today (September 4). Mr Tsang recently visited the Hong Kong athletes and was pleased to learn that they were in high spirits and well-equipped for the games.

     Encouraging the athletes, Mr Tsang said: "You all demonstrate an unswerving spirit of sportsmanship, determined to overcome difficulties and dedicated to stringent training. I sincerely hope all of you will give your best in the sports events next week, striving for excellence and reaching new heights through participation and exchange."

     The 21st Summer Deaflympics Taipei 2009 will be held from tomorrow (September 5) to September 15. More than 40 athletes from the Hong Kong Sports Association of the Deaf (HKSAD) will take part in the games and compete in six sports events, athletics, badminton, basketball, judo, table tennis and taekwondo.

     Since 2006, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has been providing annual subvention to the HKSAD through the Sports Subvention Scheme.
