A 45-year-old Taiwanese man was jailed for six years with the enhancement of sentence under Section 27 of the Organized and Serious Crimes Ordinance for conspiracy to defraud at the District Court today (August 20).
The court heard that a male victim received a phone call from defendant's partner earlier and told him that his family member requested for money urgently. Officers of Regional Crime Unit, Kowloon East mounted an operation in Tsim Sha Tsui on December 1 last year and the defendant was arrested when he took money from the victim.
Further enquiries revealed that the defendant was also in connection with another two deception cases from November to December last year in which the victims suffered a total loss of about $190,000.
The defendant was subsequently charged with Conspiracy to Defraud and sentence was handed down today.
Police will continue to take rigorous effort to strike telephone deception cases.
