Proprietor fined for violation of safety rule

     OPG Printing Limited was fined a total of $50,000 at Sha Tin Magistrates¡¦ Court today (August 10) for violating the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and the Boilers and Pressure Vessels Ordinance.  The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident on September 13 last year in a workplace at Tai Po in which a worker died after being badly burnt.

     According to Section 6A(2)(a) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the proprietor shall provide and maintain plant and system of work that are, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risk to the health of the person employed.  Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for 6 months.

     According to Section 15A of the Boilers and Pressure Vessels Ordinance, the owner of a new boiler or pressure vessel shall, not later than 30 days preceding the day on which he intends to put the same into use, apply to the Boilers and Pressure Vessels Authority for registration.  Any owner who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $10,000.
