SFST to attend World Capital Markets Symposium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

     The Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Professor K C Chan, will depart for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, this afternoon (August 8) to attend the World Capital Markets Symposium. Organised by the Securities Commission Malaysia, the symposium will be held on August 10. While in Kuala Lumpur, Professor Chan will meet with Malaysian financial officials and business executives and brief them on the development of Islamic finance in Hong Kong.

     Professor Chan will meet with leading figures in the financial services sector in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. He will also attend a welcoming dinner to be hosted by the Malaysian Prime Minister, Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, for distinguished speakers of the symposium including Nobel laureate Mr Paul Krugman.

     On Monday (August 10), Professor Chan, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, Minister in the Malaysian Prime Minister's Department (Economic Planning Unit), and Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Singapore Finance Minister, will exchange views on global imbalances and the need for structural regulatory reforms at the symposium's special ministerial session.

     On Tuesday (August 11), Professor will call on Tan Sri Dato' Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Governor and Chairman, Bank Negara Malaysia; Tan Sri Amirsham Abdul Aziz, Chairman, Malaysian National Economic Advisory Council; and Datuk Latifah binti Datuk Abu Mausur, Deputy Secretary General of Treasury (Policy).

     Professor Chan will return to Hong Kong on Tuesday night.
