LWB commends outstanding trainees for upgrading skills

     The Labour and Welfare Bureau today (August 3) presented Skills Upgrading Scheme awards to a group of trainees in the Building Maintenance and Decoration Industry in recognition of their professional skills, work safety awareness and efforts in pursuing continuous learning.

     The presentation of the "2009 Skills Upgrading Scheme Lo Pan Award" was held at Lo Pan Temple to also promote the "Lo Pan spirit".

     Speaking at the ceremony, the convenor of the scheme's working group, Mr Choi Chun-wa, said, "To encourage trainees to pursue lifelong learning, the Lo Pan Award is presented annually to outstanding trainees on the Lo Pan Patron's Day by the Building Maintenance and Decoration Industry Working Group under the Labour and Welfare Bureau. Today marked the fifth anniversary of the event.

    "The awardees' efforts in acquiring new skills and striving for innovations and perfection are commendable. It is consistent with the 'Lo Pan spirit', which emphasises continuous improvement.

     "With the launch of the building rehabilitation schemes and the Minor Works Control System, elementary workers have to continuously upgrade their skills to meet the industry's need for a quality workforce."

     Another officiating guest, the Honorary Chairman of Kwong Yuet Tong Hong Kong, Mr Ho Sai-chu, said, "The Skills Upgrading Scheme provides in-service workers with systematic vocational training to upgrade their skills, and promotes work safety to reduce work-related injuries.

     "The awardees' outstanding performance shows that the scheme has effectively enhanced the quality of the industry's workforce and promoted the culture of self-upgrading and life-long learning," Mr Ho said.

     Also officiating at the ceremony were the Director of Buildings, Mr Au Choi-kai; the President of the Hong Kong Construction Association, Mr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung; the President of the Hong Kong General Building Contractors Association, Mr Ho Wai-wah; the President of the Hong Kong Construction Sub-Contractors Association, Mr Tse Chun-yuen; the Chief Executive Officer of the Construction Workers Registration Authority, Mr Godfrey Leung King-kwok; the Vice-chairman of the Occupational Safety and Health Council, Mr Raymond Choy Wai-shek; the Director (Training) of the Construction Industry Council, Mr Charles Wong Doon-yee; the Chairman of Kwong Yuet Tong Hong Kong, Mr Gilbert Lau Tai-wah; the First Vice-chairman of Kwong Yuet Tong Hong Kong, Mr Kenny Lo Kam; and Assistant Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Ms Iona Sham Hiu-tung.

     The Skills Upgrading Scheme, which was introduced in 2001, now covers 26 industries. It provides professional and specific skills training for in-service workers with an aim of enhancing their employability and competitiveness in the labour market as well as promoting the culture of continuing education and lifelong learning.
