About 400 young musicians, who have received intensive training from renowned Chinese and overseas musicians at the "2009 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp", will perform a variety of Chinese and Western music in two afternoon concerts in August to share their achievements with the public.
The first concert, to be performed by the Camp Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Junior Chinese Orchestra, will be at 3pm on August 2 (Sunday) at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
Highlights of the programme include Hong Kong premiere of Sui Li-jun's "Northeast Wind", the popular "Amazing Grace", Verdi's "Les Vepres Siciliennes Overture", Bennett's "Suite of Old American Dances" and the 4th piece "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity" and the 6th piece "Uranus, the Magician", from Holst's representative piece "The Planets".
A second concert will be at 3pm on August 9 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of the Sha Tin Town Hall, with performances by the Camp Youth Choir, Junior String Orchestra and Chinese Orchestra.
The programme includes the Hong Kong premiere of Su Wen-cheng's "Music Sound", Swedish pop group ABBA's "Dancing Queen", Shostakovich's representative piece "Symphony for String Orchestra from 'String Quartet No. 8, Op.110'", "Summer" from Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" and Kuan Nai-chung's "Praying for Rain".
Conductors for the concerts are Member of China Conductors Association and Resident Conductor of Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Mr Lei Yu; Member of the Conducting Committee of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society and Artistic Director of the Shenzhen Music Lover National Orchestra, Mr Sun Peng; Conductor of the Taichung County Cultural Centre Chinese Classical Orchestra and Taipei Youth Chinese Orchestra, Mr Chen Ruqi; Director of Wind Studies and Associate Professor of Music at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music in USA, Dr Thomas Verrier; Assistant Professor of Violin at the University of Texas in USA and Faculty Member of Interlochen Arts Camp, Dr Martha Walvoord and Music Director of ?rebro Chamber Choir in Sweden and Conductor of World Youth Choir in 1991 and 2005, Mr Fred Sj?berg.
Presented by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the "2009 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp Concerts" are part of the summer extravaganza "International Arts Carnivals 2009".
The Hong Kong Youth Music Camp is a major annual summer music activity of the Music Office to provide intensive training to musicians in a scenic campsite. Participating musicians are also encouraged to take part in recreational and sports activities at the camp.
Tickets at $80, $60 and $40 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessionary tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
