Greek classic "Antigone" to be staged in modern adaptation
**********************************************************

Theatre du Pif will present "Antigone" in the dramatic adaptation by the great 20th century French playwright Jean Anouilh. Renowned Canadian director Jovanni Sy and experienced actors Bonni Chan and Lee Chun-chow playing the roles of Antigone and Creon respectively will venture out on a pain and grief-filled journey to fight for their beliefs.

Sophocles' ancient Greek tragedy "Antigone" is one of the most sharply individualised and compelling figures in Western drama. In 1940, Jean Anouilh adapted it and the adapted version has also become a classic in its own right.

After Antigone's brother leads a failed civil uprising, she is forbidden to bury his body by the ruler, Creon. Her decision to risk execution and bury him forces those around her to decide whether personal principles are more important than public duty.

The girl dared to say no.

Other performers include Sean Curran, Suen Wai-fong, Victor Pang, Melissa Leung, Chan Kwun-yee, Krissy Lam, Jo?o Pamplona and Alexandre Cerda. The programme will be performed in English with Chinese subtitles.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), "Antigone" by Theatre du Pif will be at 8pm from July 30 to August 1 (Thursday to Saturday), at 3pm on August 1 (Saturday) and at 5pm on August 2 (Sunday) at the Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
