The Wan Chai District Office and Wan Chai District Council today (June 23) jointly held a health talk to promote the message of human swine flu prevention to teachers, staff and parents of kindergartens, primary and secondary schools as well as staff and members of youth centres, elderly centres and district organisations.

At the health talk in the Leighton Hill Community Hall, a representative of the Department of Health explained the latest influenza situation, symptoms and mode of transmission of human swine flu to the participants. The speaker also emphasised the importance of observing good personal hygiene among children to avoid disease infection, especially during the school closure period. Disinfectant packs were distributed to the audience to raise their awareness of the importance of maintaining personal hygiene.

District Officer (Wan Chai), Mr William Yuen, said, "Human swine flu is no longer an imported disease. In response to the rise in transmitted local cases involving schoolchildren, Wan Chai District Office and Wan Chai District Council jointly organised this health talk to raise the awareness of teachers, supporting staff and parents on schoolchildren's personal hygiene, which is vital to prevent a spread of the disease in the community."

Wan Chai District Council Vice-chairman, Mr Stephen Ng, said the council would continue to work closely with the District Office and other relevant departments to organise different kinds of activities in the fight against the disease. From early July, volunteers will be recruited to visit the single elderly in the district. Social enterprises will be engaged later to help clean their flats.
