The Islands District Office and Islands District Council, in support of the "Clean Hong Kong" campaign, today (June 20) organised a large-scale publicity activity on various islands to launch a home visit and cleaning programme in the district.
The activity was also to appeal for the community to stay alert and give continuous support in maintaining personal, household and environmental hygiene.
Islands District Officer, Mr Byron Lam, and Vice-chairman of Islands District Council, Ms Chau Chuen-heung, officiated at a ceremony to launch the programme in Tung Chung, Lantau Island, with representatives and volunteers from government departments and voluntary organisations.
After the ceremony, officiating guests and volunteers visited single elderly people in Yat Tung Estate to help clean their flats and joined a publicity bus to Tung Chung town centre to distribute disinfectant packs to residents and promote the messages of "Clean Hong Kong" and disease prevention.
During the half-year-long visit programme which was co-organised with voluntary organisations, volunteers and household cleaning ambassadors from the co-organisers will help clean the flats for more than 400 elderly people and visit more than 2,000 families from minority groups to ensure that they will not have any barriers in accessing information on disease prevention due to physical or economic constraints.
Mr Lam said, "The event can encourage and assist the residents to fight the pandemic and further enhance the public's awareness of personal and environmental hygiene to help control the spread of influenza in the community, as well as show the community's care for the elderly and minority groups."
To further promote the messages of disease prevention, the organisers held a bus parade to tour around Tung Chung, Discovery Bay, Tai O, South Lantau and Mui Wo this morning. Publicity activities were also held on various islands, including Cheung Chau, Peng Chau, Lamma Island and Discovery Bay, and leaflets and disinfectant packs were distributed to residents to urge them to maintain good environmental hygiene.
The Islands District Office and Islands District Council had already organised various activities to fight against the pandemic, including distributing leaflets and disinfectant packs to residents, and holding a series of health talks.
