The following is issued on behalf of the Advisory Committee on Teacher Education and Qualifications (ACTEQ):

The Advisory Committee on Teacher Education and Qualifications today (June 19)  issued its Third Report on Teachers' Continuing Professional Development to report on the progress of teachers' continuing professional development (CPD) and make recommendations for its way forward for the coming years.

Speaking on the progress of teachers' CPD, advisory committee chairman, Mr Cheung Pak-hong, said, "the third report carries findings of an ACTEQ study conducted in the 2007-08 school year and we are encouraged by the extent of progress made in the past few years. The study showed that most teachers have been actively participating in a good variety of CPD activities to enhance their own professional capacity."

Mr Cheung said the third report paid special tribute to all education partners and stakeholders for their contribution and dedication in fostering teachers' CPD.

"The positive developments as indicated in the ACTEQ study have assured us that teachers' CPD has been progressing well. The advisory committee considers that the future of teachers' CPD should capitalise on the existing strengths and focus on quality and effectiveness. In this connection, we have recommended the continuation of the present soft approach of implementation to reinforce teachers' CPD," Mr Cheung said.

"Our deliberations aim to provide space and flexibility for schools and teachers to plan, organise and participate in CPD activities that will best cater to their needs. We look forward to the continued support and collaboration of all stakeholders to facilitate the implementation of the proposals as outlined in this report, so the culture of teachers' CPD will be firmly rooted in schools and in the teaching profession."

The third report has been uploaded on ACTEQ's website (www.acteq.hk).
