The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:
The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (June 15) pursued nine claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $148,000 on behalf of 28 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.
At the tribunal's hearing today, two of the defendants, Web-On (Asia) Limited, and Lam Hon Chung and Lam Siu Ping Samson trading as Luen Shing Nylon Co., did not dispute the amounts claimed. The adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $33,495 and $9,349.84 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The other seven defendants, namely Union Charm Limited trading as Shun Tak Yue Wong Seafood Restaurant, Ho Chi Sang trading as Wai Lee Cargo Services Company, Golden Asia (Hong Kong) Limited, Wong Chee Kan trading as Fu Lee Plastic Metal Factory, Ho Fung Ping Lanna trading as M. I. Incubator Laboratory, Goodworld Relishes & Canned Foods Company Limited and Chung Wing Ping trading as House of Beauty & Fitness, did not appear at today's hearing. In their absence, the adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $39,713.64, $18,627, $17,799.44, $17,745, $6,907.4, $2,763.44 and $1,781.61, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The amounts awarded will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The tribunal further ordered the respective defendants to pay $160, $149, $160, $180, $165, $159, $90, $76 and $119 as the costs in respect of the claims.
Web-On (Asia) Limited pleaded guilty previously at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts to a count of failing to enroll its employee in an MPF scheme as required by the ordinance and was fined $3,000.
