To prevent the spread of human swine influenza, nearly 100 volunteers from the disciplined forces and non-governmental organisations gathered in Sham Shui Po today (May 27) to pay home visits to single elderly people in the district.
Sham Shui Po District Council Chairman Dr Chan Tung, Working Group on Healthy and Safe Community Chairman Mr Wong Kam-kuen, District Officer (Sham Shui Po) Ms May Chan and District Social Welfare Officer (Sham Shui Po) Mrs Elaine Yue joined volunteers at a launch ceremony in Pak Tin Estate, Shek Kip Mei, to mark the start of the activity.
The volunteers came from the Police, Immigration Department, Fire Services Department, Correctional Services Department, Customs, Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council Sham Shui Po District Elderly Community Centre, Sik Sik Yuen Ho Kin District Community Centre for Senior Citizens and Caritas Cheng Shing Fung District Elderly Centre (Sham Shui Po). From today to mid-June, the volunteers will pay home visits to single elderly people and distribute disinfectant packs. They will also help clean the flats of the elderly with special needs.
Dr Chan thanked the volunteers for their participation. He said elderly people play a vital role in the fight against human swine influenza. Home visits by volunteers could help spread flu prevention messages to the elderly, reminding them to pay attention to personal and home hygiene.
The activity is jointly organised by the Sham Shui Po District Office, Sham Shui Po District Social Welfare Office and the Sham Shui Po District Council's Working Group on Healthy & Safe Community.
