The delegation of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on the study of the Economic Development and Environmental Protection in Pearl River Delta Region continued its duty visit today (May 16) to observe research and development, logistics, cargo handling and environmental protection facilities in Shenzhen.
Early in the morning, the delegation visited the R&D Centre and the exhibition hall of the BYD Company Limited and received a briefing on the company's solar energy facilities and MD electric vehicles. The delegation then proceeded to the South China International Logistics Centre to obtain first-hand information about its operation and exchange views with its management on issues of mutual interest.
Members of the delegation attended a lunch hosted by Vice-Mayor of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, Mr Zhuo Qinrui. After the lunch, the delegation visited the Shenzhen International Airport to understand more about its cargo handling system. The delegation then visited Laokukeng Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Plant, during which they received a briefing on the plant's waste burning technology and toured around the landfill facilities.
The President of the Legislative Council and leader of the delegation, Hon Jasper Tsang Yok-sing, said that members were very interested in renewable energy items and Hong Kong could learn from Shenzhen experience. Chairman of the Panel on Economic Services, Hon Jeffrey Lam, believed that if Shenzhen and Hong Kong could strengthen communication and cooperation, he believed that it would help in the development of the logistics and environmental protection facilities in both places. Chairman of the Panel on Environmental Affairs, Hon Audrey Eu, pointed out that the waste has been categorised before being transported to the Laokukeng Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Plant for further treatment, and the standard of the plant's waste burning technology was also high.
The delegation departed for Guangzhou in the evening and joined the night cruise of Zhujiang to observe the development of the coast of Zhujiang.
Members of the delegation will visit Guangzhou Likeng WTE Plant and meet with officials of the Guangdong Provincial Government tomorrow (May 17). They will then visit Nansha Wetland Park and South China Oceangate Container Terminal Company Limited.
