Italian ensemble to give concert in June

     The internationally acclaimed I Solisti Veneti, from Italy, will perform in Hong Kong next month (June).

     Under the baton of its director Claudio Scimone, the ensemble will perform Albinoni's "Concerto in F", Vivaldi's "Concerto for two Violins, Cello and Strings", "Concerto in D for Mandolin and Strings" and "Concerto in D for Violin and Strings", Pasculli's "'Simpatici ricordi della Traviata' for Oboe and Strings", Bottesini's "Grand Duo Concertante for Violin, Double bass and Strings", Rossini's "Variations in E-flat for Clarinet and Strings on themes of 'Mose in Egitto' and 'La Donna del Lago'".

     Born in 1934, Claudio Scimone studied conducting with Dimitri Mitropoulos and Franco Ferrara. He established his reputation by conducting operas and various symphony orchestras, such as the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, Orchestre Philarmonique of the French Radio and the symphonies of Montreal, Melbourne and Tokyo.

     Scimone is also a famous musicologist who revived many Italian Baroque and Renaissance works by Vivaldi, Rossini and other great composers. He has recorded more than 150 record titles with many world premiere recordings. For his musical achievements he has received numerous awards including the Grand Prix du Disque de l'Academie Charles Cros in Paris several times.

     Since its establishment in Padua in 1959, I Solisti Veneti has given concerts throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia, as well as making regular appearances at the world's leading festivals, including the Salzburg Festival.

     Many of the world's greatest vocalists and instrumentalists have performed with the ensemble, including Salvatore Accardo, Ruggero Raimondi, Katia Ricciarelli, Placido Domingo, Uto Ughi, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Cecilia Gasdia, Nikita Magaloff, Marylin Horne, Maurice Bourgue, Kenneth Gilbert, James Galway, Lucia Valentini Terrani, Mstislav Rostropovich, Svjatoslav Richter, Paul Badura-Skoda, Chris Merritt, the Ambrosian Singers, Stanislav Bunin and Eugene Kissin.

     The ensemble has recorded more than 300 LPs and CDs, including the complete works of Vivaldi, Albinoni, Geminiani, Marcello and Tartini, and some have won important awards, such as the Grand Prix du Disque de l'Academie Charles Cros of Paris and the Grammy.

     Recently, the ensemble collaborated with the municipality of Venice, Padua and Verona to organise the Veneto Festival, which specialises in the promotion of the artistic and cultural values of Veneto music.

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Concert by I Solisti Veneti" will be at 8pm, June 9 (Tuesday), at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $100, $150, $200 and $250 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
