Drugs seizure at Tai Lam Centre for Women
*****************************************

The Correctional Services Department (CSD) was committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in its custody, a spokesperson of the department said today (March 30).

Every measure was taken by the CSD to prevent the smuggling of dangerous drugs into, and eradicate their presence in, correctional institutions, the spokesperson said.

The comments followed the case of dangerous drugs being swallowed by a remand who later discharged them in her stool.

Surnamed Leung, the 33-year-old remand prisoner was admitted to Tai Lam Centre for Women on March 24 on a charge of possession of dangerous drugs.

Acting on information that Leung might have swallowed some drugs before her admission, CSD officers put her in an isolation cell for close observation.

A total of six tablets of suspected heroin wrapped in plastic sheets were discharged in Leung's stool on March 28.

The CSD is still investigating whether Leung is still concealing more dangerous drugs. The case has been reported to Police.

There were 93 seizures of dangerous drugs last year (2008) and 27 this year up to February 28, with the seizures mainly in the reception centres.
