Members of Four Gig Heads and Made in Hong Kong @ Four Gig Heads who represent the two generations of local percussionists, will give a concert in April.
The concert will showcase a variety of Chinese and percussion instruments including bangu (drums), marimba, zylophonia, vibraphone, and many others. The rhythmic programme includes Hong Kong premiere of Angus Fu and Luk Kin-bun's "Territory", Li Zhengui and Tan Dun's "A Poem on the Drum" by leading drum of Yim Hok-man, "Xylophonia" Xylophone solo by JoJo Ho, "Purge" Vibraphone by Margie Tong, Christopher Rouse's "KU-KA-ILIMOKU", and Tchaikovsky's "Finale of Symphony No. 4" arranged by Daniel P Fyffe.
Founded in 1997, Four Gig Heads comprises local percussionists Chau Chin-tung, Ho Yi-on, Angus Fu Ye-chung and Luk Kin-bun. The group has a versatile repertoire encompassing an impressive array of musical traditions, including Peking opera percussion music, the gong-and-drum music of eastern Zhejiang, the daliuzi of the Tujia ethnic minority of western Hunan, American country music, Brazilian samba, as well as works by leading contemporary composers.
The group has been engaged in a wide variety of cultural events and performances with local dance and theatre groups. These included concerts celebrating the 5th and 10th anniversaries of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2002 and 2007, performances at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival and Arts Festivals in London, Berlin and the Philippines.
In 2007, Angus Fu and Luk Kin-bun founded a young version of Four Gig Heads - Made in Hong Kong @ Four Gig Heads. Members of the group are young, avid percussionists who were auditioned and selected by Four Gig Heads. With extensive stage experience, they are also versatile in Chinese and Western percussion music, in both traditional and contemporary styles, as well as Brazilian samba and African drums.
Also to perform at the concert will be Yim Hok-man, winner of "Artist of the Year 1999 by the Hong Kong Artists" Guild; and local young percussionists JoJo Ho, Margie Tong and Jason Leung.
