Fourteen sculptors from overseas, the Mainland and Hong Kong participating in the sculpture symposium at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade completed their works of art today (March 22). Their works are on display with another 22 works by local artists, from today until April 19 at the promenade.
The exhibition, entitled "Oasis.Mirage:Hong Kong International Sculpture Symposium 2009", was opened today by the Assistant Director (Heritage and Museums) of Leisure and Cultural Services, Dr Ng Chi-wa, the President of the Hong Kong Sculpture Society, Mr Ha Bik-chuen, the Chairman of the Visual Arts Group of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Mr Lee Kam-yin, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Robert H.N.Ho Family Foundation, Miss Helen Ng.
The sculpture symposium is jointly organised by the Art Promotion Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Hong Kong Sculpture Society.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Assistant Director (Heritage and Museums) of Leisure and Cultural Services, Dr Ng Chi-wa, noted that the symposium and the exhibition would give the public the opportunity to share the fruitful achievements of the artists and the fun of artistic creation. He said the symposium not only provided a platform for exchange between the participating artists, but also offered an opportunity for the artists and the public to enter into direct communication.
Sculpture, as an important form of public art, should not just be installations in the public space. The Art Promotion Office and the Hong Kong Sculpture Society said they hoped that the symposium would be the start of a new attempt to establish a platform where relationships between artists and the public can be developed.
Artists participating in the exhibition are Emil Adamec (Czech Republic), Tapiwa Chapo (Zimbabwe), Manit Kantasak (Thailand), Lim Soo Ngee (Singapore), Kabir Ahmed Masum Chisti (Bangladesh), Christopher Rothermel (USA), Chris Scolari (France), Tsai Yao Cheng (Taiwan), Yang Xiao Hua (Guangzhou), Shen Yun Qing (Chengdu), Chan Kwok Man (Hong Kong), Lai Yat Fong (Hong Kong), Leung Yiu Wah (Hong Kong), Tai Iat Kuan (Hong Kong), Ban Zhang (Hong Kong), Victor Tai Sheung Shing (Hong Kong), Ha Bik Chuen (Hong Kong), Amy Ng Kam Mei (Hong Kong), Keyee Lam (Hong Kong), Au Ping Nam (Hong Kong), Leung Tat Hung (Hong Kong), Ng Lai Mui (Hong Kong), Siy Tak Yin (Hong Kong), Man Fung Yi (Hong Kong), Chu Tat Shing (Hong Kong), Mok Yat Sun (Hong Kong), Aries Lee (Hong Kong), Kacey Wong (Hong Kong), Yip Fung To (Hong Kong), Wong Kwok Chung (Hong Kong), Chan Tsun Ming (Hong Kong), and Ho Yuen Leung (Hong Kong).
