School-leavers and job seekers have been invited to explore education and career opportunities in Hong Kong's maritime industry by visiting the booth of the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council at the Education and Careers Expo 2009, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) between tomorrow and Sunday (February 19-22).
"Despite the current economic downturn, job opportunities in the maritime industry are plentiful and will remain so in the foreseeable future, because of the acute manpower shortage in the industry in recent years," a spokesman for the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council said.
The exhibition describes the types of jobs and the entry requirements for various professional careers in the maritime service sectors in Hong Kong, including ship finance, ship brokering, ship management, marine insurance and maritime law and arbitration, as well as the professional posts in the Marine Department.
It provides information on various maritime-related education programmes offered by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Vocational Training Council's Maritime Services Training Institute and the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Training (Tsing Yi), as well as training incentive schemes like the Hong Kong Maritime Scholarship, Sea-going Training Incentive Scheme and Ship Repair Training Incentive Scheme.
Visitors who wish to find out more should not miss the "Gateway to Maritime Career" seminar, to be held from 4pm to 4.45pm on Friday at Meeting Room 402-403, HKCEC.
The speakers will be Director, Benefit Marine Services Limited Mr Peter Wong, Assistant Professor, Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies, Hong Kong Polytechnic University Mr Yip Tsz Leung, Manager, Maritime Services Training Institute, Vocational Training Council Mr Tony Yeung, and Senior Lecturer, Department of Engineering, Vocational Training Council Mr Yeung Wing-cheung.
This opportunity to enquire directly about maritime careers and training programmes is open to all on a first come, first served basis.
The Education and Careers Expo 2009 is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council at Hall 5, HKCEC, Harbour Road, Hong Kong, from February 19-22. Admission is free.
