Employer fined for violation of safety rule

     Swire Duro Limited was fined $12,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court today (January 22) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved an accident which occurred on June 24, 2008, at a workplace in Tsing Yi. A worker was found to have fallen about 1.4 metres from a working platform and died in hospital six days after the accident.

     According to sections 6(1), 6(2)(a), 6(2)(c) and 6(3) of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, the employer must, so far as reasonably practicable, provide and maintain a safe system of work, and provide the necessary information, instruction and training to ensure the safety and health at work of his employee.  Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
