After bitter contests in the past few months, the overall champions and other winners of the Corporate Games 2008 received their trophies at a prize presentation ceremony held at Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre today (January 11).

The Corporate Games (the Games) are a series of multi-sport competitions organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) for local industrial and commercial organisations/public sector and their employees. It aims at promoting a team spirit among the employees and strengthening their sense of belonging to their respective organisations.  Through the participation in the Games, the employees can develop a habit of doing exercise regularly, thereby promoting "Sport-for-All" and building an energetic and healthy community.

Officiating at today's Prize Presentation Ceremony, the Chief Leisure Manager (Major Events) of the LCSD, Mrs Kane Li, said the department was committed to organise various recreational activities and sport competitions to build a vigorous and healthy community.

She also said that built on the momentum generated by Olympic-related events last year, the sport-for-all spirit had been further promoted in the community. Hong Kong will host the 5th East Asian Games (EAG), the first international multi-sport event, in the territory in December. Moreover, the 2nd Hong Kong Games (HKG) to be held in May will further fuel the enthusiasm for the EAG at community level.

She said: "Finals of some of the sports and the opening ceremony of the HKG will be held in venues destined for the EAG to test the efficacy of the related facilities to hold major sports activities and competitions so as to pave way for the EAG."

The Corporate Games 2008 was held between September 2008 and January 2009. Some 8,300 people from various trades and business of 273 organisations competed in 10 sports: 7-a-side soccer, 11-a-side soccer, badminton, basketball, distance run, table tennis, tennis, tenpin bowling, track and field and volleyball.

Participating organisations are divided into three groups. Group A is for organisations employing 300 people or more in Hong Kong, while Group B for organisations employing less than 300. Group C is for Government departments. The overall champions of the Corporate Games 2008 for these three groups were Hospital Authority, Popular Holdings Limited and the Hong Kong Police Force respectively.
