The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
In response to media enquiries, the spokesperson of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) gave the following response:
During a routine check on January 2, 2009, the mortuary staff of PYNEH found that the dead body of a newborn baby boy was missing. Despite an extensive search, the body could not be recovered.
On January 5, the hospital management decided to report the incident to the police and the Hospital Authority head office. The hospital has arranged to meet the family of the baby to explain the incident and extend an apology. A multi-disciplinary team has been established in the hospital to support the family and provide assistance.
The hospital is very concerned about the incident and will co-operate with and assist the police in the investigation. A special panel has been set up to investigate and follow up the incident.
The hospital regrets the incident and once again extends its apologies to the family.
