Trade Controls Officers of the Customs and Excise Department to use new Smart Warrant Card from 23 December (with photos)
************************************************************

Trade Controls Officers of the Customs and Excise Department will carry a newly-designed Smart Warrant Card from December 23.

"The roll-out of the new Smart Warrant Card aims to tie in with the development of the Customs and Excise Department," a spokesman for the department said today (December 19).

"With increased computerisation in the department, the introduction of the Smart Warrant Card helps streamline procedures and enhance operational efficiency. It also paves the way for the use of the card at the new Customs Headquarters Building scheduled to be completed in 2010," the spokesman added.

Similar to the Smart Warrant Card of the Service Officers of the department rolled out in July this year, the new card for the Trade Controls Officers also has various forgery-proof features, which help ensure effective identification of the card-holders. These features include security marks (departmental logos) on the front, an ultraviolet-fluorescent label on the back, and an implanted chip.

Applied with advanced cryptographic technology, the new card is well protected from fraudulent alteration. It is also made of polyvinylchloride (PVC) with the Customs logo more prominent on the top.

To distinguish the identity between Trade Controls Officers and the Service Officers of the department, the new card for the Trade Controls Officers is greyish blue in colour. Besides, there is an Annex to the new card which serves to certify that the card holder is an authorised officer for the purpose of the Ordinances listed thereon.

If members of the public have any questions in relation to the new Smart Warrant Card for the Trade Controls Officers, please call the Duty Controller on 2852 3185.
