An employer was fined $10,800 at Fanling Magistrates¡¦ Court today (December 1) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.
The case involved a fatal accident on March 13, 2008, at a workplace in Sheung Shui, in which a cleaning worker fell to his death while cleaning a lorry.
According to sections 6(1) and 6(2)(a) of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, an employer must provide and maintain a system of work that is, as far as reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to the health of his employees. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
