The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (November 20) the November 2008 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, two feature articles entitled "Labour Productivity Index for Major Economic Activities, 2000 to 2007" and "Revision of the Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification" are included.

"Labour Productivity Index for Major Economic Activities, 2000 to 2007"

Labour Productivity Index (LPI) is an important economic indicator of an economy.  It shows how efficient labour input is used for generating real output and is very useful in analysing the contributions of changes in labour productivity to various industries and the economy as a whole.  Factors affecting changes in LPI include changes in technology, organisational structures, management practices and capital, etc.

This feature article outlines the methodology and data sources for compiling LPIs in Hong Kong, and analyses the LPI for major economic activities during 2000 to 2007.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Logistics and Producer Prices Statistics Section, C&SD (Tel. : 2894 8402).

"Revision of the Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification"

It is important to comply with international standards in official statistics so as to achieve harmonisation and comparability in the global context.  In keeping abreast of the latest developments of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities Revision 4 (ISIC Rev. 4), Hong Kong has recently incorporated the conceptual and structural changes of ISIC Rev. 4 into Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification Version 2.0 (HSIC V2.0) when reviewing the existing HSIC, i.e. HSIC V1.1.  Significant changes in the structure of the Hong Kong economy and the emergence of new economic activities have been taken into account when devising HSIC V2.0.

HSIC V2.0 will be adopted in various surveys of C&SD progressively starting from 2009.

This feature article describes the development and implementation of HSIC V2.0, with particular highlights on the changes from the HSIC V1.1 to HSIC V2.0, namely, changes in structure of classification scheme, changes for enhancing international comparability, and changes initiated by Hong Kong to better meet the requirements of local users.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Central Register of Establishments Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2582 4646).

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and Balance of Payments.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
