*****************************************************

The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, met the British Prime Minister, Mr Gordon Brown, at Downing Street, London yesterday (November 18, London time) to discuss the impact of the current financial turbulence on the two economies and the continued strength of UK trade relations with Hong Kong.

They agreed that, as two of the worldˇ¦s leading financial centres, the UK and Hong Kong must both play a major role in addressing the current economic situation. They agreed that authorities and regulators in both financial centres should step up contact and cooperation towards long-term agreement on international financial architecture and regulation, adding that such discussion should be based on partnership, not competition.

The Prime Minister welcomed the role played by Hong Kong at the recent G20 Summit in Washington, which Hong Kong attended as part of the Chinese delegation. He and Mr Tsang both agreed on the importance of breaking the deadlock on the Doha WTO trade round.

The Prime Minister and the Chief Executive also agreed on the strength of the trade and investment links between the two economies.
