Local orchestra to perform popular Chinese music
************************************************

The Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra will give two concerts of popular Chinese music in December and January.

Under the batons of Chan Wing-wah, Ching Sau-wing and Zhao Xintai, the orchestra, together with national class one musician (instructor grade) Xu Nengqiang and many local musicians, will perform an array of Chinese music masterpieces. These will include "Ambush on All sides", "Moonlight on the Spring Water", "The Song of the General", "Thunder in a Drought", "In Celebration of the Good Times", "Reflection of the Moon on the Waters", "Carrying the Bridal Sedan Chair", "Sanmen Gorge Capriccio" and "Battle Against the Typhoon".

Established in 1994, the Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra has worked hard to promote Chinese culture, to enhance the development of Chinese music in the city and to foster extensive exchange activities between local and overseas music circles. In 1995, the orchestra released three albums of Chinese music, among which "Erhu Showpieces by Three Maestros" recorded with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shanghai National Music Orchestra has remained one of the best-selling albums in the Asian-Pacific region. In 1997, the orchestra staged "The Love for Our Motherland" concert in celebration of Hong Kong's reunification with the Mainland. In 2000, a series of five concerts and 11 seminars were organised in the form of a chronicle under "A Retrospective Look at Chinese Music in the 20th Century". As the first of its kind in the realm of Chinese music, the programme attracted great interest from music circles on the Mainland and overseas.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "A Concert of Popular Chinese Music" will be held at 8pm on December 7 (Sunday) at the Theatre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre; and at 8pm on January 18, 2009 (Sunday), at the Auditorium, Kwai Tsing Theatre.
