Creative sand sculptors are invited to show their talent by taking part in this year's Southern District sand sculpture competition. Application forms are available from tomorrow (November 3).
Organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the Southern District Sand Sculpture Competition and Sand Sculpture Exchange Programme 2008 will be held at Shek O Beach on November 30 (Sunday).
Competitors will have the chance to appreciate the works of the sand sculptors from Kagoshima Hioki City, Japan, who are invited to join the exchange programme on that day.
The sand sculpture competition will be divided into four categories - open, family, school (primary school and secondary school) and disabled. Each team should comprise two to six members. Teams can decide their own themes and will have two hours to create their sand sculptures in an area of about three metres by four metres.
A spade and a bucket will be provided for each team. The participants can also bring along their own simple tools. Natural materials such as shells, stones, empty cans and towels can be used as ornaments. Materials that will pollute the beach, such as chemicals and paint, are prohibited.
The adjudication of the competition will be based on skill, creativity, relevance to the theme and aesthetics. Prizes will be awarded to the winner, first runner-up, second runner-up and third runner-up of each division. All teams will also vie for the overall championship.
Transportation from Aberdeen or Tin Hau MTR Station to Shek O Beach will be arranged for contestants. Boarding passes will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis during the enrolment.
Application forms will be available at the Southern District Leisure Services Office, Southern District Recreation and Sports Association, Southern District Office and Social Welfare Department Aberdeen Integrated Family Services Centre from tomorrow. Completed application forms, together with copies of identity documents and an entry fee of $60, should be submitted on or before November 21 to the Southern District Leisure Services Office on the 4th floor of Aberdeen Municipal Services Building, 203 Aberdeen Main Road, Hong Kong.
Since places for the competition are limited, applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Enquiries can be made on 2555 1268 during office hours and on 2809 4557 during Saturdays and Sundays.
