The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (August 11) pursued six claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $150,000 on behalf of 19 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.
At the tribunal's hearing today, one of the defendants, Chiu Kee Construction Company Limited, did not dispute the amount claimed. The adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA the sum of $21,450, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The other five defendants, namely Lead Young Sea & Air Freight Co. Limited, Sunny Place Limited, Chan Lai Ping trading as the Prospect Garment Fty, Best Wealth Enterprise Limited trading as Delight Restaurant and The Pool Company Limited, did not appear at today's hearing. In their absence, the adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $49,600.06, $46,255.74, $25,844.53, $4,323.37 and $2,500, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The amounts awarded at the tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The tribunal also ordered the respective defendants to pay $120, $160, $176, $120, $185 and $146 as the costs in respect of the claims.
