The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
Following the earlier announcement about six patients in an infirmary ward of Cheshire Home Shatin (SCH) presenting with symptoms of influenza like illness, the hospital announced the following update today (August 7):
Three more female patients (aged 72 to 89) have presented with fever and respiratory symptoms. The three patients are being isolated for treatment and in stable condition. Since August 3, a total of nine patients have presented with the symptoms. Seven of them tested positive for Influenza A.
In addition, five male patients (aged 48 to 84) from another infirmary ward have presented with symptoms of influenza-like illness since August 2. They are being treated under isolation and all are in stable condition. Appropriate tests were arranged for the patients. Viral test results of the five patients are positive for Influenza A.
Admission and visits to the two wards have been suspended. All patients in the wards concerned are under close surveillance. Infection control measures have already been reinforced. Thorough cleaning and disinfection have been carried out in the wards.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
