Employer fined for violation of safety rule

     An employer was fined $20,000 at Eastern Magistrates' Court today (August 5) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident on November 19, 2007, at a workplace in Jardine's Lookout, Hong Kong, when a worker was electrocuted.

     According to sections 6(1) and 6(2)(a) of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, employers must provide and maintain a system of work that is safe and without risk to the health of his employees. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
