A total of 117 nominations for the 2008 Legislative Council election were received by the Returning Officers of the five geographical constituencies and 28 functional constituencies during the two-week nomination period. Nominations started on July 19 and closed at 5pm today (August 1).
Eight more nomination forms were handed in to the Returning Officers today.
The Returning Officers received notices of withdrawal of candidature from two nomination lists, one from New Territories West geographical constituency and the other from New Territories East geographical constituency.
A full list of all validly nominated candidates will be published in the Gazette after the Returning Officers have validated and confirmed the eligibility of candidature of the nominees.
The Electoral Affairs Commission will hold a briefing session for the candidates at 7.30pm on August 5 at the Hongkong International Trade and Exhibition Centre. Commission Chairman Mr Justice Pang Kin-kee will chair the session and advise candidates on the important points to note in running their election campaigns and brief them on the electoral arrangements. Representatives from the Independent Commission Against Corruption and the Hongkong Post will also be present.
After the briefing session, the Returning Officers will determine by drawing lots the order of list of candidates/candidates on ballot papers and the allocation of designated spots for the display of election advertisements.
Poll will be conducted on September 7 if the number of validly nominated candidates in a geographical constituency/functional constituency exceeds the number of seats in that constituency.
