CS' speech at Opening Ceremony of Hong Kong Olympic Piazza (with photos/video)
***********************************************************

Following is the speech by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, at the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong Olympic Piazza today (July 25).

James, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

I am delighted to officiate at the opening ceremony of the Olympic-themed Piazza organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

In just two weeks the spectacular and long-awaited Beijing Olympics will begin.  Hosting the Games is not only the pride of the Chinese people, but also our solemn promise to the international community.  Hong Kong is honoured and proud to co-host the Equestrian Events and be part of the Olympic history.  After three years of vigorous preparation, we are ready.  Tomorrow we will be welcoming the first batch of athletes and horses.

As we enter the final count-down, we are feeling the heat of the Olympic atmosphere.  I appreciate Hong Kong Tourism Board¡¦s great idea of setting up this Olympic-themed Piazza at the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui.  The activities and setting up of this Piazza create a wonderful Olympic ambience for the enjoyment of tourists and local residents.  They also tell the story of this Olympic city.  A warm welcome to the tourists and our residents to this Piazza.  Share with us the joy and unique experience of Olympics.

I also call upon every member of the tourism trade and my fellow citizens to extend our friendliness and hospitality to our guests, so that every one of them will leave with a smiling face and a fond memory of this great city.

Last but not least, I'd like to wish every success in the Equestrian Events and to all athletes who will compete here good luck!

    Thank you.
