The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:
The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (July 22) obtained one order for payment of outstanding MPF contributions at about $74,000 against an employer in the District Court. Meanwhile, the MPFA pursued nine claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $180,000 on behalf of 68 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.
The District Court today issued judgment against one employer, Treasure Cheer Limited. The defendant was ordered to pay the MPFA the sum of $74,773.98, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to six employees of the defendant.
Meanwhile, at the tribunal's hearing today, a defendant, B & R Electronic System (H.K.) Limited did not dispute the amount claimed. The adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA the sum of $18,360, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The other eight defendants did not appear at today's hearing. They were Lead Young Sea & Air Freight Co., Limited, Multi Tone Hong Kong Development Limited trading as Man Ho Seafood Restaurant, Designproduction Limited, Chan Yik Hung trading as Sun Cheung Kong Catering Ctr, I.G.A Limited, Hang Tai Offset Printing and Packing Limited, Plenty Profit Holdings Limited trading as Lucky Fellow Restaurant and Chan See Ho Joey trading as Wai Ho (F&B) Management. In their absence, the adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $48,996.66, $31,549.54, $28,298.29, $27,951.32, $15,767.26, $6,141.01, $4,130.72 and $306.7, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The amounts awarded at both the District Court and the tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees¡¦ MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendant to pay costs of $930. The tribunal ordered the respective defendants to pay $168, $160, $190, $225, $190, $175, $128, $90 and $60 as the costs in respect of the claims.
Plenty Profit Holdings Limited trading as Lucky Fellow Restaurant pleaded guilty previously at Kwun Tong Magistracy to 20 counts of failing to make MPF contributions on time and was fined $32,500.
