Drugs Seizure at Tai Lam Centre for Women
*****************************************

The Correctional Services Department (CSD) was committed to maintaining a drug-free environment to all people in its custody, a spokesperson of the department said today (July 5).

Every measure was taken by the CSD to prevent the smuggling of dangerous drugs into, and eradicate any presence of them in correctional institutions, the spokesperson said.

The comments followed the case of dangerous drugs swallowed by a remand who later discharged them in her stool.

The remand, surnamed Wan, 47, was admitted to Tai Lam Centre for Women on July 2 on charge of "Trafficking in a dangerous drug".

Acting on information that Wan might have swallowed some drugs before her admission, CSD officers put her in an isolation cell for close observation.

A total of nine tablets of suspected heroin wrapped in plastic sheets were discharged in Wan's stool this morning.

The CSD was still investigating whether Wan still concealed more dangerous drugs. The case has been reported to Police.

The spokesperson said there were 102 seizures of dangerous drugs last year (2007), with the seizures mainly in the reception centres.
