Picture shows "Running girl". Pausanias says of the Games of Hera at Olympia, "They run in the following way: their hair hangs down, a tunic reaches to a little above the knee, and they bare the right shoulder as far as the breast", which describes this girl runner exactly. This statuette is thought to have been made in Sparta, where women were expected to take part in athletics, as part of that city's structured way of life.
