National class one musicians from Guangdong and Hong Kong will join the Yin Ngai Opera & Musical Troupe of Hong Kong in a concert of traditional Cantonese music in July.
The virtuosi, Buk Chan-wing, Yu Qiwei, Tong Hoi-suen and Man Oi-duen, will perform well-known solo works "Going out to Sea", "Monkey Show", "Thunder in a Drought", "Racing Clouds and Flowing Water". They will also play ensemble masterpieces "Intoxicated under the Moon", "A Victorious Return" and "The Toll of the Temple Bell" in the form of "wu jiatou".
"Wu jiatou", also known as "five pieces", is a unique traditional Cantonese music ensemble comprising five different kinds of instruments with at least one from each of the treble, mediant and bass sections. In early days, the main instrument was erxian which was supported by yangqin, sanxian, yueqin, hengdi or yehu. Later erxian was replaced by gouhu (yuehu) because the sound of the latter is much richer with its greater contrast.
The Yin Ngai Opera and Musical Troupe of Hong Kong was established in 1988, with veteran Cantonese musician Tsoi Wing-hong as its music director. Vocalists in the troupe are amateur aficionados of Cantonese operatic arias, while the ensemble section is made up of young musicians from the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, as well as professional musicians and veteran coaches in Cantonese operatic arias. The troupe has performed frequently with famous artists, and has given concerts of Cantonese music and operatic songs in Hong Kong.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert will be at 8pm on Saturday, July 12, at the Theatre, Sheung Wan Civic Centre.
