************************************************************

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, discussed labour issues with representatives of the Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Labour Unions during a visit to its headquarters in Sham Shui Po this afternoon (May 23).

Mr Cheung met with the Chairman of the union, Mr Chan Wai-lun, Vice-chairman Mr Poon Siu-ping, Legislative Council member Ms Li Fung-ying, and several union representatives.

Mr Cheung listened to their views, and briefed them on the Government¡¦s latest efforts in protecting the rights and benefits of workers, promoting labour relations and employment services as well as occupational safety and health.

Mr Cheung said that the retraining and skills upgrading courses organised by the union had helped place workers into employment or transfer to other jobs.

Mr Cheung started his latest round of visits to labour unions with a visit to the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions last week.

¡§I look forward to strengthening communication and co-operation with the labour unions in fostering labour relations, safeguarding employees¡¦ rights and enhancing their safety and health at work.

¡§I hope that the unions would join hands with the Government to make our community a better place in which to work and live,¡¨ he said.
