Pauline Ng appointed Secretary General of LegCo Secretariat (with photo)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

    The Legislative Council Commission announced today (May 23) that Ms Pauline Ng Man-wah, Assistant Secretary General of the Legislative Council Secretariat, has been appointed to succeed Mr Ricky C C Fung as the Secretary General of the Legislative Council Secretariat.

    Ms Ng was selected through an open recruitment exercise for the Secretary General's post. She will assume the post for a term of three years with effect from September 29, 2008. Mr Fung will proceed on pre-retirement leave on the same day.

    The President of the Legislative Council, Hon Mrs Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai, who is also the Chairman of the Commission, said, "I am very pleased with the appointment of Ms Ng as the Secretary General of the Legislative Council Secretariat. Ms Ng has extensive experience in serving the legislature as well as profound administrative and leadership skills. I have every confidence that she will ably lead the Secretariat to face the challenges ahead and continue to deliver quality services to Members of the Legislative Council and the public."

    Mrs Fan also extended her gratitude and appreciation to Mr Fung for his dedication and contribution to the legislature over the past 14 years. She said, "Since becoming the Secretary General of the Legislative Council Secretariat, Mr Fung has served with enthusiasm and commitment throughout the years. Despite the implementation of the enhanced productivity programmes, he could still manage to shepherd the Secretariat to maintain its excellent performance and meet the rising expectations of Members and the public in both quality and quantity of the work of the Secretariat." Mrs Fan wished Mr Fung a happy life after the completion of his work with the Legislative Council in late September.

    Mr Fung has been the Secretary General of the Legislative Council Secretariat since the Secretariat became independent of the Government in 1994.

    A brief biography of Ms Pauline Ng Man-wah is as follows:

    Ms Ng, aged 57, joined the Legislative Council Secretariat in April 1994 as Assistant Secretary General after serving in the Hong Kong Government for 22 years. Before joining the Secretariat, she was a Chief Executive Officer on secondment to the then OMELCO Office from 1990 to 1994 in charge of departmental administration. One of her main responsibilities was to set up the independent Legislative Council Secretariat.

    In January 1997, Ms Ng headed a team to provide secretarial services to the Provisional Legislative Council which operated in Shenzhen before July 1, 1997. She was then the Clerk to the Provisional Legislative Council. On July 1, 1997, she resumed the position of Assistant Secretary General. Since April 2008, Ms Ng has been deployed to assist The Legislative Council Commission in the planning and detailed design work of the new Legislative Council Complex at Tamar.

    Ms Ng received the Chief Executive's commendation for Public Service in 1999.
