**************************************************

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, discussed labour and welfare issues with representatives of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions (FTU) during a visit to its headquarters in To Kwa Wan this afternoon (May 15).

Mr Cheung met with the Chairman of the FTU, Mr Wong Kwok-kin; Legislative Council members, Mr Wong Kwok-hing and Mr Kwong Chi-kin; and more than 20 representatives of the FTU's affiliated unions.

He listened to their views, and told them about the Government's latest efforts in protecting the rights and benefits of workers, and promoting employment services, occupational safety and health as well as welfare services.

The FTU has established a solid base in the provision of employment supportive services and vocational training for youngsters and middle-aged people, Mr Cheung said.  They have also set up a network of district and elderly services for workers and the public.

He commended the FTU's Lok Kwan Social Services for its efforts in fostering the message of self-help and mutual aid and helping the underprivileged integrate into society.

Mr Cheung said he looked forward to enhancing communication and co-operation with the FTU in promoting labour relations and safeguarding employees' rights and benefits.  He hoped that the Administration and the FTU would work for the common goal of building a caring society.
