Broadcasting Authority receives complaints about TV show
********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Broadcasting Authority:

The Broadcasting Authority (BA) has received around 2 100 complaints since the broadcast of the television programme "Operation Relief 2008" on the Jade channel of Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) on February 17, 2008, at 8pm-10.35pm.

After investigation, 1 445 complaints were found to be related to the programme. Most of the complainants expressed their disapproval of the appearance of a local actress cum singer in the charity show. Many of them considered her participation in the show disturbing and would exert a bad influence on children.

The BA endorsed the decision of the Commissioner for Television Entertainment Licensing, who after careful study of the allegations of the complaints and the relevant legislation, and in exercising her delegated authority under the Broadcasting Authority Ordinance (Cap. 391), has classified the complaints as outside section 11(1) of the ordinance, viz. such complaints are outside the remit of the BA. According to established procedures, the BA will convey the public concerns to TVB.
