February 2008 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available
*******************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (February 21) the February 2008 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, three feature articles entitled ¡§A Profile of Youths, 2006¡¨, ¡§International Comparison Program¡¨ and ¡§Usage of Personal Computers and Internet Services by the Hong Kong Residents from 2000 to 2007¡¨ are included.

¡§A Profile of Youths, 2006¡¨
----------------------------

The 2006 Population By-census (06BC) was conducted by C&SD during the 18-day period from July 15 to August 1, 2006.  Results of the 06BC have been released in stages starting from February 2007.  The 06BC provides a wealth of data on the socio-economic characteristics of the population in Hong Kong, thus allowing studies to be undertaken on various facets of the community and also on specific sub-groups of the population.  This feature article utilises the results of the 06BC to give an overview of youths (persons aged 15 ¡V 24) in Hong Kong.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the 2006 Population By-census Office, C&SD (Tel.: 2716 8025).

¡§International Comparison Program¡¨
-----------------------------------

The conventional approach of converting the values of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and other expenditure aggregates into a common currency by means of market exchange rates does not produce statistics suitable for comparisons across economies.  This is because market exchange rates may over- or under-estimate the domestic price levels, especially for those goods and services not traded between economies.  The International Comparison Program (ICP) aims at producing a set of Purchasing Power Parities (PPPs) which would enable meaningful volume comparisons of GDP and other expenditure aggregates among different economies.  Results of the 2005 ICP have recently been released by the World Bank.

This feature article aims to introduce the methodology of the ICP and provides some highlights on the preliminary results for the 2005 ICP.

¡§Usage of Personal Computers and Internet Services by the Hong Kong Residents from 2000 to 2007¡¨
--------------------------------------------------------------------

In view of the rapid development of the information technology (IT) in Hong Kong in recent years, it is considered necessary to collect information on IT usage and penetration regularly in order to gain better understanding of the latest development of IT in the community.  The C&SD has been conducting the Thematic Household Survey on IT usage and penetration annually since 2000.  This feature article describes the usage of personal computers and Internet services by the Hong Kong residents from 2000 to 2007.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Social Surveys Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2887 0416).

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and Balance of Payments.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
