Young people and job-seekers wishing to explore career opportunities in Hong Kongˇ¦s maritime service industry are invited to visit the booth of the Marine Department at the Education and Careers Expo 2008, which is to open at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre tomorrow (February 21).

The Marine Department booth, in the design of a passenger vessel, is set up to promote the professional image of the department and to attract youngsters to join the maritime service industry.

Apart from display panels and videos featuring the functions and operations of the department, the booth also provides information about the six recruitment ranks in the department, including their duties, entry requirements, salary and promotion prospects.

The six recruitment ranks are Marine Officer, Surveyor of Ships, Assistant Marine Controller, Marine Inspector II, Assistant Mechanical Inspector and Senior Artisan (Heavy Crane Operator).

Another attraction at the booth is a "Full Mission Ship Simulator", which provides youngsters with a better understanding of a maritime career.  Visitors can experience the realistic feel and touch of ship bridge navigational equipment, as well as the excitement of navigating through Hong Kong waters in simulated scenarios.

Marine officers will be present to answer enquiries.

The Education and Careers Expo 2008 is jointly organised by the Labour Department and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council at Hall 5, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Harbour Road, Hong Kong, from February 21 to 24. Admission is free.
